Amazon: Tambopata rainforest

Today we were up at 5:00am for our 2 hour ride canoe ride around Lake Sandoval. This is a great time to see the animals as they wake up. We saw howler monkeys, herons and caymans!..nice

Back to the lodge for breakfast then a 2 hour nature walk to learn about the Amazon trees and plants, how they are used for medicine purposes..one of the trees has the cure for malaria!..we even had some brazil nuts fresh off the tree!

Back to the lodge for a well deserved lunch of pork chops, rice, beans and broccoli..we are so well fed!...After an hour long nap, Neil and I ventured out and saw some McCaw parrots..got some pretty good shots too...

Another 2 hour boat ride to see the animals as they come to the lake to sleep..we saw the sunset..very pretty, we saw squirrel monkeys, capuchin monkeys and red howler monkey!...we also learned that when it is dark and you turn your flashlight on towards the shore, you will see many red eyes staring back at you..those are caymans..many of them...nice...

We also saw many stars...and back to the lodge for dinner...and sleep

Amazon Jungle: Puerto Maldonado

After arriving in Lima at 1:30 am, we took a 45 minute drive to the hotel only to find out we had to get up in 3 hours to take our flight to Puerto Maldonado..sigh.

So 3 hours of sleep later, we got back on bus to take a 45 minute drive back to the airport to take our plane to our destination.

At Puerto Maldonado, we boarded a motorized canoe that took us to our 45 minute walk to a paddle canoe that would take us across Lake Sandoval to our jungle resort for the next 2 days..whew!

We saw brown capuchin monkeys on our paddle canoe..how adorable..and cayman alligators..not so adorable but still a sight to see. We saw McCaw parrots and herons and more.....pictures to come later...

Our lodge was not at all what we thought it would be. It was nice with generators for eletricity and hot water..boy were we spoiled! Although I didn´t actually take a hot hot shower but anyway...they shut the power off at certain times to conserve electricity so my showers not so hot..but didn´t bother me.

A night walk enabled us to see spiders, ants, secadas and more..very nice..very warm weather. And our dinner was delicious!!! chicken with rice and spinach..wow..we were spoiled! OF course that came with the bad news we would be up at 5:00am the next day!...but no worries...it was a good first day!

Lima

Hi everyone,

So I am off to the jungles of Peru in 4 days!!! How very exciting.

I will try to keep this updated as much as I can...remember that you will not hear from me for 2 days in the jungle and 3 days on the trek to Machu Pinchu but since we have an entire day in Lima, I can spent it catching up on the week's events.

Hopefully, we will be able to upload photos as well....won't that be exciting for you!. Some of you know that Neil and I like to take many many many pictures....:)

Talk to you soon.

Sandra
